The element has been in and out of the HTML5 spec about as many times as an appendage’s in the dance, Hokey cokey. Recently, the element has had some great semantic improvements which Bruce Lawson kindly explains in this article.

HTML5 Doctor explains the WebVTT (Web Video Text Tracks) specification – allowing us to add subtitles to our HTML5 videos.
Whilst no browsers currently support it, this is definitely something to keep an eye on and there are JavaScript options available.
